Belize Government Rejects Norwegian's Proposal

Norwegian Cruise Lines proposed an all-new cruise terminal to be located on Crawl Caye, a small island off the Placencia peninsula but Belize's goverment put the idea to an abrupt stop.

With concern over the environmental impact that a cruise terminal would have over the ocean's ecosystem near the port because a major issue. Since the damage that would be caused by construction and the disruption of the reef systems would be catastrophic, Belize turned down their proposal.

Crawl Caye is a small, 45 acre island almost untouched by tourists and is located within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In their most recent efforts, Norwegian tried to move the site to Harvest Caye but it was again turned down.

Both parties said that they would like to continue working together moving forward to find a more suitable location for this new port.
